V: Sam, are all the buildings in Oxford University of antique beauty?

S: Mostly. However, there are also some modern buildings. Let me show you a picture... look!

V: Wow! What a splendid building it is!

S: Yeah! It is the new building of the Department of Biochemistry at the University, which is the largest such department in Europe.

V: With coloured glass facadesthe building doesnt seem to be a research building at all.

S: I did think so at my first sight of it! Whereas, its our preconceptions about how a research building should be designed! Actually, the world-class scientific research department aims to create a state-of-the-art research building that houses a substantial amount of contemporary art.

V: It is really an innovation to blend scientific research and art together.

S: Quite right! On 20 th May 2009the Royal Institute of British Architects held its Southern Regional awards ceremony in the new Biochemistry building. Architects of the building are awarded to the RIBA Stirling Prize for making the greatest contribution to British architecture in the past year.

V: RIBA Stirling Prize? What is it?

S: It is a British prize to persons for excellence in architecture, and is considered to be the most prestigious architecture award in the United Kingdom. The awards ceremony is organised annually by the Royal Institute of British Architects, and the Prize laureates may receive a stipend of GB20000. The laureates must be RIBA members, but the building can be anywhere in the European Union.

V: Oh! It is quite like the Pritzker Architecture Prize, which is often referred to as the Nobel Prize of architecture.

S: Yeah! Both of them are considered to be the world’s premier architecture prizes.

V: Well, do you know why the Department decided to creat a new building?

S: The tour guide have ever mentioned it. It seems that the old buildings couldnt provide enough research facilities for graduate students, visiting scholars, and research groups.

V: I see. Although historic buildings possess great charm, but they contain a lot of shortcomings.

S: Right. The establishment of the new building can also relieve the burden of teachers and students, and they neednt rush about a variety of buildings across the University.

V; Hum. Do you have other pictures of such kind of building?

S: Let me see! Oh, here is the picture of the new Institute of Biomedical Engineering, which also opened in recent years.

V: Compared to the new Biochemistry building, the new Institute is slightly inferior. However, it is also very special,

S: Each one has its good points!

V: That’s correct!

V:没错!
