大多数地名不用冠词，但也有很多的地名必须要加上冠词，这与地名的构成有关，也与习惯有关。

( 1)自然界中的一些地理名称大多要加 the，例如：河流、湖泊、运河、海洋、海峡、沙漠、山脉。
河流： the Yellow River黄河 the Nile尼罗河
湖泊： the West Lake西湖 the Great Lakes五大湖
运河： the Panama Canal巴拿马运河
海洋： the Pacific太平洋 the Atlantic大西洋
海峡： the English Channel英吉利海峡
沙漠： the Sahara撒哈拉大沙漠
山脉： the Rocky Mountains洛基山脉
( 2)只有一个词的国家名，一般不加冠词。

( 3)由普通名词构成，或含有普通名词的国名或地名前须加 the.
