Yamin出生在加州的洛杉矶，父亲 Shaul Yamin，以色列的伊拉克犹太裔，母亲 Claudette Goldberg Yamin(于 2008年 3月 31日去世，终年 65岁)，美国的德系犹太人后裔由于前专业歌手的身份和在她儿子的美国偶像比赛时她的"
火热的精神"以及由 Ryan Seacrest颁发的" Golden Idol for Proudest Family Moment Award"而闻名。 Yamin 11岁时随他的家庭迁移到 Richmond，弗吉尼亚州，当他 14岁时他的父母离异，他的父亲返回洛杉矶，自从第五季的美国偶像之后，他也迁居到洛杉矶市。
Yamin在他十几岁唱卡拉OK时首次发现他的声乐天分。虽然他没有受过声乐方面的训练，但是他在业余时间在当地的爵士乐队担任主唱，并开始接触 Stevie Wonder Whitney Houston，和 Donny Hathaway的音乐。他曾就读于 Richmond的道格拉斯第弗里曼高中，在高二时辍学。后来他曾在当地的 R& B广播电台 Foot Locker工作，使用昵称 E-Dub。一直到他参加美国偶像。
