Over 80,000 of those people are in a refugee camp called Zaatari close to the Syrian border. People there survive on vast amounts of aid provided by the UN and other agencies, although increasingly the private sector is playing a key and perhaps surprising role in keeping the population supplied. For the BBC, Dale Gavlak went to Zaatari, now Jordan's fifth largest city in its own right, to meet some of the businesses springing up there.

My family had to escape the war and destruction back in Syria, where I worked as a farmer and a trader. We came to Jordan more than a year ago and lived outside of the Zaatari camp in a nearby town. But we actually decided to move into the refugee camp about three months ago. With businesses sprouting up here quickly, and people making money, I knew this was the place we had to be.

I'm in a privately-owned grocery store in Zaatari camp that has been set up by a Syrian refugee. He's an entrepreneur. He says that he has owned shops back in Syria, and if he had the permission he can actually open up three more shops. This is quite impressive. He's got a huge space in which he's selling everything, from vegetables to detergents to meat and everything in between.
