In 2008, Taiwanese singer Jam Hsiao said he would like to try movie acting, and the role he would like to play most was a killer. Four years later, on April 15, Hsiao won the Best New Performer(最佳新演员) award at the 31 st Hong Kong Film Awards for his first movie, The Killer Who Never Kills(《杀手欧阳盆栽》).

In this dark comedy, Hsiao plays Ouyang Penzai, a killer who tries to save the life of every person he is supposed to kill. The story is based on a novel by Taiwanese writer Giddens Ko(九把刀), who directed another popular movie called You Are the Apple of My Eye.

Hsiao said that he was very nervous while shooting his first movie. “ Acting is hard because you have to pretend(假装) you are another person,” he said. One difficult part, for example, was making himself cry at the right time.

“ Sometimes when the director asked me to cry, I couldn’ t get in the mood,” said Hsiao. “ But when he didn’ t ask, my tears came out.”

Another problem was memorizing his lines(台词). Hsiao has a special illness called dyslexia(阅读障碍), which gives him problems reading.

So while shooting the movie, Hsiao asked his assistant to read the script(剧本) out loud to him. He memorized the lines by listening to them. Hsiao said that he had to do the same while memorizing the words of his songs.

What kind of role does Hsiao want for his next movie? The 25 - year-old said he wants to be in an action movie, because he“ didn’ t have many chances to try action in my first movie since the killer I played doesn’ t kill at all.”
